Disc 1 (90 minutes) -
The feature-length documentary film ADDICTION is the centerpiece of the Addiction project. Bringing together the nation's leading experts with award- winning filmmakers, it consists of nine separate segments, including:
  1. "Saturday Night in a Dallas ER," by Jon Alpert
  2. At Parkland Memorial Hospital, there are over 30,000 injury-related visits to the emergency room every year - nearly half of which involve drugs or alcohol.

  4. In Pittsburgh, a middle-age woman turns to police as a last resort to save her 23-year-old daughter Aubrey.

    Researchers enlist addicts to participate in a study investigating the brain's response to drug cues.
  6. "The Adolescent Addict," by Kate Davis and David Heilbroner
  7. At 10, Dylan's biological father left his family. Now 15, Dylan has a drug problem.
  8. "Brain Imaging," by Liz Garbus and Rory Kennedy
  9. The ability to look inside the brain through electronic imaging has yielded many advances in the study of addiction.
  10. "Opiate Addiction: A New Medication," by D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus
  11. In the '60s, methadone was found to be successful in treating addiction to opiates like heroin. More recently, buprenorphine has taken the treatment one step further.

  13. An estimated 17 million Americans suffer from alcohol- use disorders, but only 13% are being treated with medication proven to be effective
  14. "Steamfitters Local Union 638," by Barbara Kopple
  15. For years, Don Perks had a reputation as one of the steamfitter union's hardest workers - and one of its biggest drinkers. After a series of close calls, Don finally turned his life around, and decided to help other union members with drinking problems.
  16. "Insurance Woes," by Susan Froemke
  17. Among the most troubling issues facing addicts and their families today is that of insurance: many insurance policies for individuals and companies simply don't cover long-term treatment of drug addiction.

Island At War (a three disc set)

  • Episode One -With a German invasion a virtual certainty, islanders rush to secure spots on the few boats leaving for England for three families-politician James Dorf and his wife Felicity, policeman Wilf Jonas and his wife Kathleen, and shopkeeper Cassie Mahy and her husband Urban-time to evacuate runs out
  • Episode Two- Cassie refuses to sell to the German soldiers until sadistic Lieutenant Walker pays her a visit. Angelique and June Mahy reopen the photo shop abandoned by their father's friend. Mr. Isaaks. They enlist the help of Zelda, one of Mr. Isaaks's former employees. After the German commander. Baron Von Rheingarten, takes overhalf of the Dorr's manor house for his headquaters, the Dorr's soldier son Philip returns to the island on a spy mission.
  • Episode Three -Now stuck on the island, Philip and Eugene hide out in Wilf and Kathleen's barn which is repeatedly searched by the Germans. Worried for Kathleen's safety, Sheldon Leverque her wheeler-dealer brother, moves the fugitives to a new deny being a spy, which Philip cannot do because he's been seen. The baron shadows Felicity with a hint of malice, and young German pilot Bernhardt tries to court Angelique.
  • Episode Four - Horrified that his scheme to save Eugene has failed. James asks the baron to take his life instead. Philip, who balmes his father for Eugene's fate, continues to pose as the Dorr's gardener. Kathleen is forced to undergo a brutal examination at the VD clinic because the Germans suspect she knows more than she is willing to tell them, June sings for the Germans at a party, and Wilf accuses her of fraternizing with the enemy.
  • Episode Five - Walker, who's become obessed with Zelda, is put in charge of removing jews from the island. He learns her secret and tries to use it to his advantage. but she goes into hiding. The British have shot down a number of German planes, and Angelique fears that Bernhardt is dead. Shedon secures a contraband pig that is cause for celebration at the farm, but the party ends in a confrontation about Wilf's role as the baron's chauffeur. Cassie manages to get an abundant supply of black market food but pays a high personal price.
  • Episode Six - June continues to sing for the Germans at the 50/50 Club, causing a local man to accuse her of sleeping with the enemy. Philip is desperate to escape to England with the information he has gathered on the island. james and Wilf help him hatch a plan. Sheldon suggests that Zelda also seie this chance to escape.
